Have you noticed that all the planes have designs painted on their wings and bodies?
Why is that?
At the very start of the war, planes had no markings at all. But this caused a big problem — soldiers on the ground would try to shoot down any plane they saw… and sometimes they even shot down their own side by mistake!
So, countries began painting special symbols under the wings so planes could be spotted from the ground. These markings are called Roundels or Insignias. Each country had its own design.
Some pilots even added their own personal pictures, like a Kewpie Doll inside the letter D, or a Devil with a Bomb — the emblem of the American 96th Squadron!
