A New Zealand Hero
Did you know?
Keith Caldwell’s nickname was ‘Grid ‘, because he often called aeroplanes a “grid” – Kiwi slang for a bicycle.
Your Mission
What Air Force base, very close to here, did Keith Caldwell become the commander of?
Video script:
Keith Caldwell was New Zealand’s top fighter ace — that means he shot down more enemy planes than any other Kiwi pilot!
Here he is, standing on the wing of his plane after it was smashed in a mid-air crash. And guess what — he didn’t even have a parachute! Allied pilots weren’t given them, because commanders thought they might just jump out at the first sign of trouble — and too many planes would be lost.
So how did Keith survive? The only way was to climb out and balance on the wing, ready to jump low enough to the ground before the plane crashed. What a brave move!
