Poppies
The Red Poppy
Did you know?
New Zealand sent 10,000 horses to World War One — but only four made it home.
Your Mission
Can you spot the three purple poppies?

Video script:

During World War One, about 100,000 New Zealanders went away to fight — and sadly, around 18,000 never came home.

The poppy was one of the first flowers to grow in the muddy battlefields of France, where many New Zealand soldiers died. That’s why we wear a red poppy on ANZAC Day — to remember those brave soldiers.

But look closely — you’ll also see three purple poppies here. These are for the brave animals who went to war too.

The most famous New Zealand horse in the war was called Bess. She was so well-known that there’s even a book about her in our shop!
