The Workshop
Broken Wings
Did you know?
In World War I, propellers were made of wood by hand. Thin wooden planks were glued together to make them stronger.
Your Mission
Can you spot the mess on the floor? And who has made their home in the rafters?

Video script:

This is one of the busiest exhibits! Look around — there’s a man making a propeller, two more fixing an engine, and another repairing a broken wing.

Early aeroplanes weren’t made from metal. Instead, they were built with a wooden frame, then covered with fabric stitched tightly over it. After that, the fabric was painted with something called “dope” to pull it tight and help it survive the weather.
