In just 18 months, he shot down 80 planes - more than any other pilot in the war.
This scene shows his final flight. He was flying low over France when a single bullet hit him in the chest. Manfred managed to land the plane, but he died soon after.
Soldiers quickly gathered around the crash site. They knew who he was - and took pieces of the plane as souvenirs. Even his boots were taken!
